ABOUT EMILY:
Emily Stehle is a mixed media fiber artist. She was an Emerging Artist in 2017 for Florida CraftArt, in 2018 for Gasparilla Festival of the Arts and 2020-21 for Creative Pinellas.
She has been an ever-evolving creative basket maker for more than 30 years and every day finds new inspiration in the world. She is known for weaving baskets out of non-conventional materials taken from the trash can or found in the street. With a vision that discard objects could become transformative art; she also wanted to demonstrate “you don’t need to spend a lot of money to create art.”
“Postcards, business rack cards. Junk mail. Plastic bottle caps. Metal beverage pop tops. The plastic sealers from Half and Half cartons. Plastic tags used to tie the plastic bag for bread. Anything small and round that can be drilled. Anything that can be cut into strips at least 6 inches. I collect this stuff and strive to make beautiful things…functional and non-functional art baskets, paper wall textiles and sculptures. I hope my art has a positive impact on excess consumerism and the environment.”
Her work has been exhibited in shows throughout Florida and nationally winning numerous awards at the National Basketry Organization, Florida State Fair and Florida CraftArt. She has a studio in Pinellas Park at the Arts Village.
Besides creating art out of found objects, she enjoys playing and teaching ukulele at the Safety Harbor Public Library. She and her husband Mike have a band called “2 Happy Ukers.”
“We are happy, indeed when we play.”
Her work is included in the exhibition Material Mastery: Florida CraftArt, Permanent Collection of Fine Craft, now on view through August 27th.
