“Artbreak” Japanese Performance Art

“ArtBreak”-  Japanese Performance Art at LRMA

ArtBreak has been made possible with the support of SPC Libraries, SPC Department of International Programs and SPC Student Life and Leadership.  

The Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art at St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs campus, invites students and the community to take an “ArtBreak” on Thursday, November 16th, from 12:00-2:00 p.m. This festive event includes refreshments, music, hands-on art activities, gallery guides and dynamic performances at 1:00pm by visiting Japanese artists artists SCARA and KOHO. Classical guitarist Miko Krupa will accompany the performances with Japanese style music.  

ABOUT THE ARTISTS: 

Scara Abe (SCARA): is an Ink painter on kimono, tapestry, and canvas. She expresses the ancient beauty and soul of Japan by connecting it to the future. 

 

She has performed throughout Europe, including the Louvre Museum in Paris. She has won numerous awards both in Japan and internationally. Some of her awards and exhibitions include: 

 

France Excellence Award Six-sided folding screen picture “Moon Heaven and Earth” 

Japan Rambouillet 2022 Tokyo Contemporary Art Exhibition Special Award Winner The National Art Center, Tokyo/Roppongi Japan-France International Contemporary Art Exhibition “Amaterasu’s Prayer Horizon Reincarnation”, Salon d’automne 2020-2022. KOHO is a Japanese Calligrapher, born in 1996. At the age of 6, she picked up her first brush. She majored in calligraphy at high school and university. For seven years, she studied the basics of calligraphy it’s history, and the practice of modern calligraphy. She has won many special prizes and gold medals at public exhibitions in Japan since she was a student. 

 

She says of her work: 

 

“I would like to introduce the traditional Japanese culture of ‘calligraphy’ to the world.” 

 

Since her days as a student, she has been involved in calligraphy performances and teaching calligraphy to children in the community. Currently, she is seeking new ways to express herself that transcend the boundaries of traditional calligraphy. She is taking on the challenge of expressing attractive calligraphy in a wide range of fields, including interior, logo and signboard design, logo design.  

 

In partnership with SPC Libraries, “ArtBreak” will also feature Kaibyo: The Supernatural cats of Japan by Zack Davisson, part of 2023-2024 SPC Reads
