Benny Andrews was an artist, educator and activist. Born in Plainview, Georgia in 1930, Andrews earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1958. Soon after, he moved to New York City, where he would live, work and paint for nearly five decades.
These illustrations from Benny Andrews were created for the Flannery O’Connor’s Everything That Rises Must Converge, a collection of nine short stories, published posthumously in 1965. The flawed characters of each story are fully revealed in apocalyptic moments of conflict and violence that are presented with comic detachment.
