About the artist:
In paint and mixed media, Dolores Coe constructs works of invented spaces and narratives populated by references to landscape and its inhabitants–the iconic, cultural, and the everyday. Her “Passage” series is an exploration into what she views as child/hood/scapes. The central “characters” are derived from family photos shared during the isolation of COVID. Amid pandemic isolation and works underway, she found herself suddenly drawn to pivot and to somehow consider children and the dynamic tensions of childhood as subject–now.
These paintings were initially conceived as fragments of space/time/experience interacting within a broader field of suggestive color. She is interested in making paintings built upon abstract chunks and gestures of paint in which spaces are active, charged fields. In each of the paintings the characters are frozen in engagement within an active, fragmented, and artificial environment. She seeks to propel them out of stereotypical renderings and into the complexity of experience.
